About

I'm interested in learning in the broadest sense and particularly in the influence of popular culture, gender and social class identities and the ways that people form relationships with mathematics and science. I have a recent book out on urban youth and schooling with Louise Archer and Sumi Hollingworth which is published by Open University Press. Other things I'm been thinking about are young people's understandings of reality TV and the ways that these are classed for a paper I've written with Kim Allen and online representations of women scientists for a paper I'm writing with Marie-Pierre Moreau. I'm also still working with the ideas that I explored in a book called 'Mathematical Relationships in Education' that I edited with Yvette Solomon and Laura Black (published by Routledge in 2009) and have just started thinking about how assumptions about progress and understanding are built into mathematics education.

I'm currently obsessed by Brody and Carrie on Homeland and working my way through David Lynch's classic mystery melodrama Twin Peaks on DVD.
